Capturing HDV

richjo100 wrote on 8/24/2005, 5:59 AM
Hello all,

I have a Sony HDR-FX1E camcorder which I had hoped would be able to ingest HD with Vegas. However whenever I
open the capture program from with Vegas then it says there is not capture device. It is the same with windows.
This does nto recognise a device is connected. However I can ingest with CapDVHS whcih I got from
http://www.yamabe.org/soft/CapDVHS0306e.zip. If I flip the iLink converter on so it converts the HDV to DV
then windows picks it up and so does Vegas and I can ingest easily.

It says at this web site that this camcorder is compatible.
http://www.sirentechnology.co.uk/pages/products/items/vegas/hardware_comp.htm

so why cant I capture?

Thanks in advnce

Richard

You need to tell Windows that it's there as an HDV device.
1. go to control panel/system
2. Click on Imaging device/AVC
3. Right click for "update driver"
4. Tell windows you'll install
5. Browse to Sound/Video/Game controllers
6. In there, you'll find two Sony folders. Choose the top one, and then choose Sony DVHS driver.
Done

Search this forum for more detailed explanation, I can't search right now due to slow access, but it's been listed at least a half a dozen times in more detail. Try "HDV, Settings" or variations.

Thanks for teh reply DSE. I will have a search like you said. I did a search before but looked up the camera type whcih was probably the wrong thing.

Thanks again. I'll let you know how I get on

An awful lot of FX-1/Z1 owners would never have been able to capture HD without Spot's replies in this forum.

Is it time for Sony make this info obvious to those who buy an HD cam or Vegas when they buy or use it?

It took me about a day to get capturing to work. (I stumbled into the info in Vegas help, once, but it's almost impossible to find.) I don't know if I ever would have gotten it to work if I hadn't come across Spot's info in this forum.

I must be the exception. I had no problems with Sony's internal capture or with using Cineform's HD Connect as an external app. Windows XP SP2 is minimum required for recognition of FX1 as an A\V Unit for HDV capture.

If you don't have SP2, then you'll likely have struggles. If your'e anti-SP2 like I am...then you need to manually install the driver/point to the driver.
Glad the info helps.

I have SP2...

Don't ask me how long it took to figure out the "Use Internal Capture" setting. But then, I'm often not the brightest bulb on the string.

That's okay. Remember, the brightest bulbs on the string are the first ones to burn out.

Until the past few months, I only had XP SP1.

Search the forums for install for "CapDVHS". I used that with my Dual 1ghz SP1 for a few months after I had my FX1.

Worked fine, except use proxies for the m2t files for any performance issues.
