Capturing issue from a Canon XL1-Help appreciated

I'm using Vegas 5 and routinely capture from A Canon GL2--works great. However, when trying to capture from a Canon XL1 I am experiencing difficulties. Here is what is happening: I can capture OK to my system drive (C:) flawlessly with the XL1, (not a good idea), but when trying to capture to an external firewire drive with the XL1 the video capture screen become pixelated and mosaic in nature and numerous drops frames rendering the capture video useless. I have also tried capturing with a second XL1 with the same results and have also tried three different capturing softwares with the same undesirable results. I know the first answer would be "Why not just capture with the GL2?" I use the GL2 with my home computer and the XL1 with another computer at a different location. It seems to be narrowed down to having something to do with the external firewire drive capture. I might also add that I have captured to this same drive with this same XL1 a number of times. It stopped working for awhile and a few days later started working again and then stopped again and now will not work right at all. I have switched external drives, replaced firewire cables, etc without resolution. The OS is Windows 2000, 512MB ram and 700 mghrz--not the fastest but has always got the job done. I apologize for the long post but wanted to relay what I have done already and answer questions that I know would be asked if not stated in this post.

Slightly OT: When using an Event FX the keyframe options that should be visible at the bottom of the menu does not display on my Windows 2K system but I see it OK on my XP. Is there a setting that hides or reveals this portion of the menu? Same version and build of Vegas .

Thanks, Darrell

First, regarding the keyframes, you might just need to drag the keyframe timeline/window down. It's there, but maybe hidden. Drag from the bar a the bottom of the filter, you'll see it.

Regarding the drive, it may be that the drive you have has controllers that don't want to share the bus. Can you daisy chain the XL1, connecting camera to drive, drive to computer? That usually works for me.

Thanks for the reply. I did not try the daisy chain setup you suggested but will later on tonight. I believe you are the author of the Vegas 5 editing book I purchased recently--great book and I use it extensively.
