Capturing via ScenalyzerLive

I am by no means a skilled professional, but so far I am finding it somewhat cumbersome to work with the VV3 capture program. I had looked at the Scenalyzer product a few months back, and was less than impressed with the "feature" that allowed one to capture an entire miniDV tape in about 5 minutes. Problem was that the captured quality of image and audio was so poor that it was difficult (for me, at least) to form any impressions about the artistic value of a particular clip.

Now, however, I am becoming very fond of this inexpensive Scenalyzer program for its ability to capture and effectively display clips when used in full-resolution mode. A single clip is represented by a beginning video frame, an ending frame, and three frames inbetween. The clips are named based on their date and time of capture. The clips are organized using conventional Windows folders, and clip sorting works well. The part I enjoy the best, however, is that if I load VV3 and Scenalyzer together, I can literally "drag" each scene from Scenalyzer to the VV3 timeline.

I know every person has his or her own particular method of assembling a video product, but so far the marriage of VV3 and Scenalyzer seems particularly promising.

Scenalyzer was not designed to CAPTURE an entire tape in 5 minutes. It was designed to SCAN a tape in 5 minutes and give you a listing of the individual clips on the tape allowing you to capture ONLY the clips you really wanted to capture. Yes, the 5 minute version will be really low quality. The only way to truly capture is via real-time.

I use the tool extensively & the fellow who wrote it, Andreas Winter is a really nice fellow who takes customer suggestions to heart.

SCLive has a quite unique feature that writes filename & path info in hidden headers when it prints clips to tape. When you re-capture those clips, SCLive will recreate the filename (and optionally) path .

This is the feature I use the most, as I'll backup all the clips used to create a project to a DV tape. I can then very easily re-create the clips if I ever need to restore.

A WORD OF WARNING: The current downloadable version of SCLive (20020509) has a minor yet serious bug that set the frame rate of each captured clip to 29.97000, while VV3 (correctly) uses 29.97003 -- This will result in edits being off by a frame in certain circumstances, if you backup & then restore clips, the original and recreated are slightly different due to the frame rate. This has already been fixed, but that version is not yet in general release, it just went thru the first fround of beta testing.

Another awesome feature is the ability to capture every n frames, so you can get time-lapse effects automatically.

This is a truly awesome tool that incorporates features I wish VV had in it's own capture tool. It'd be great if SoFo could fund this guy to go even further with the app.

I used it to backup over 150 30-sec spots I had to DV tape, and when I restored it the 150 files were re-created with the correct filenames -- AWESOME!

You can get it at www.scenalyzer.com

Thanks for the URL. Sounds really interesting. Any idea when the current beta will enter prime time?
