Capturing Video

Larry124 wrote on 1/29/2004, 2:27 PM
I'm just beginning this video editing journey and will have many questions, but my first is: I have Video Factory 2.0 and in trying to capture video the computer doesn't capture in VF but defaults to " microsoft dv camera and vcr" ? Is this because I have some other program installed or is Microsoft moviemaker taking over? I cannot change it in the video menu bar on top.
Second question: I do capture in the above question but it captures in many short clips, is this normal? In a practice capture of approx. 2 minutes I ended up with several clips, if I were to capture an hour of video I would have hundreds of short clips, is this normal?

How are you capturing your movie clips? Do you go into VF and then bring up the capture window? Regarding your second question, yes, that's normal - the software detects that the camera was stopped and restarted and then creates a clip for each bit of video you shot. Personaly I like that (I only use a small percentage of the footage, and that gets trimmed), but you can disable that feature in VF.

Thank you Ian for responding. If I open VF first the video menu bar only shows my firewire card as an option, but as soon as I connect my camera the program defaults to the Microsoft capture option and I can only capture in it. If I try to revert to the firewire card all I get is "snow or noise" in the video monitoring box, and only when I highlight the Microsoftt option do I see video in the box.

the Microsoft camera is your device. The driver is provided by MS. That is what you are capturing from. Have you tried to capture and does it work?

I'm at work right now and I can't remember exactly what the VF screens show - I use Scenalyzer for my captures, too, so that's a double whammy! If it's any help, I usualy connect my camera and switch it on before I boot the PC - it's a hangover from my Studio days when that was the only way I could make it work!

If I'm reading the Capture section of the KB article correctly, Dave T2 is correct: the camera is your device and you want to be using the Microsoft Drivers.

With current G5 prices at around $3000 (not including a monitor) I'd recommend the money be better spent on a second hard drive (between $50 - 100) dedicated to video.

They're easy to install (Takes less than half an hour and requires no special tools) and it will solve virtually all your capture and output problems.

If after that you're still having the problems you describe (and I'm 98% sure you won't be) come back to the forum and we can recommend a couple of simple tweaks.

Thanks for the info. I am now using my D drive for video it has nothing else on it this is why i am so stumped.

Have you checked that DMA is enabled on your D drive?

I have tried and checked mostly everything this is driving me crazy. I even tried in Sony Click to DVD program it is always caputure in slow motion the playing back in fast.
I am doing something wrong and it is probably very simple that is why i am over looking it,
