Is there any way to capture some video I've already transferred to DVD via a Panasonic DVD recorder? I know I could connect my video camera to the DVD recorder, capture what I want on tape, and then capture again into Vegas, but I'd like to avoid that extra step.
The VOB files on the DVD you made are just MPEG2 files with whatever audio format you used. Just drag and drop them back onto your hard drive and then onto the Vegas timeline and you should be all set. If you used AC3 audio you will need some tools to convert from AC3 back to WAV since Vegas can create AC3 but not read it. Check out www.dvdrhelp.com for more info on DVD tools.
You'll need to extract the VOB files from the DVD and convert them back to an MPEG-2 program stream. Unfortunately, if you're going to be doing any editing you will have to re-encode those sections and this will result in some quality loss. If all you're doing is cuts, you should be ok, though I might not personally use Vegas for that.
Check DVDRhelp.com for a list of tools to do this.
Thanks for the responses. All I am doing is cuts and then compiling into one short video so quality is not my top priority. I'll check out DVDRhelp.com.
I went through this last week - in the end, the simplest method was to play the dvd and capture the image through a analog to digital converter. If you have a camera or deck that will accept analog in, this is perfect. (I used the little Canopus ADVC-100 converter).
