Capturing video in Vista64?

Laurence wrote on 12/2/2008, 12:29 PM
Well i can't seem to capture the 24p HDV video I shot last week on my new computer (an HP Vista64 based laptop). I tried Vegas 8,0, 8.1 and HDV Split: none of which worked. HDV split stopped immediately, and both Vegas versions pretended to capture without actually writing any clips.

No big deal, my old computer captured the stuff just fine, but I would like to capture on the new computer eventually. Can anyone suggest any other HDV capture utilities I might try?

My other option is to buy a couple more Transcend 32GB Compact Flash cards since my Z7 has the card writer option.

Try the Cineform Neo HD demo and use the capture program HDLink. It's worth a shot. Here's the capture settings for your Z7:

HDVSplit is pretty old and was tested with a wide variety of camcorders only under Windows XP 32 bit. I could never get it to work right under Vista x64, but others have, so it must be the differences in the driver that the various OSes use for each camcorder.

The only other option is to turn off DEP in Vista x64 for Vegas and/or HDVSplit, Google "Turn off DEP in Vista" or search this forum.

Laurence it may be the "24p" throwing things out as far as HDVsplit goes. Try a test run with 60i and see if that goes.

I have no issues with HDVsplit and 60i under vista64. Unfortunately I haven't got any true 24p material to experiment with.

It may be the 24p. I usually am not a fan of 24p, but in this instance, there is already a girl doing a documentary on the same subject who has shot all her stuff in 24p. I shot at the same frame rate in case we merged my work into hers (she has a lot more material) which may well happen.

Having said that, I really am liking the look. It's just a small town sort of subject with no fast moving motion and the 24p really is looking very good.

Still struggling with this. Here's what I've tried so far:

Capturing with Vegas 8: Pretends to capture. No files are created
Capturing with Vegas 8.1 Same as with Vegas 8, No clips written.
Capturing with HDVSplit: Immediately stops.
Capturing with Nero: No video preview, an unplayable 0 kb file is created.
Capturing with Vegas on my older computer: doesn't work
Capturing with HDVSplit on my older computer: works but with severe errors in the clips.

I know that Roxio is supposed to do HDV capturing. I used to use Roxio but had a couple of problems with it so I moved to Nero. Has anyone tried capturing 24p HDV in the latest version of Roxio?

Are there other capture options short of buying another editing package?

Laurence, I would be glad to help troubleshoot, but I don't have any 24p footage to ingest. Sorry buddy.

This is my first 24p project. This is also the first time I've used tape in a while. I did three tapes worth of interviews on this last trip and didn't use my usual 32GB Transcend compact flash so as to avoid having to bring my laptop and hard disc and spend time transferring footage while I was there.

Here's a post on another forum that mirrors my experience:

None of his video applications will capture in vista 64. That is exactly what I'm finding. Once I have the video on disk, all is well, but getting it off the tape is not working no matter what I try.

I can't capture 60i video either. I just tried capturing from a previous project tape.

Basically, the capture software works the transport, but no video is coming back over the firewire cable.
