Capturing with ATI AIW Card

pepp wrote on 8/24/2006, 8:15 AM
I want to capture VHS tapes and have an ATI AIW card that allows the input. I can capture using the cheesy Window Movie Maker so I know the card works. But when I try to capture with Vegas, it tells me the device is not started or not available. This has to be some configuration settting that can allow this. Anyone have an idea?

cheers!

vegas captures dv/hd/sdi, not through an ati card.

you need to use ati's capture app instead of vid cap with vegas.

Vegas does allow you to specify an external capture app. You could specify the ati app.

I thought I could specfiy another app, but the ATI option doesn't appear for me to choose it. And the ATI documentation on capturing is vague. It only tells me how to connect the device and doesn't tell me which app to capture with. I've launched all my ATI apps to see if there's some kind of input and I don't see one. I can record from cable, but can't find anything else.

THanks!

the manual has that info (at least mine does).

use the TV app. the ATI app is great for capturing straight to mpeg-2 but i've found other apps easier for avi capture (i'd use huffy). scenealyzer is a recomended one & i use uivcr.

Thanks! I don't see anywhere in the TV app to record from another source. Where are you directing the input?

Thanks for the apps suggestions.

Also, when you are going to specify an external app for Vegas to capture from, it won't list all possible apps. Instead you have to "browse" for the exe.

I don't remember the details, but if there is some option or checkbox to say that you can ALWAYS use an external app you probably don't want to do that. Unless ATI (or some other app) is the only thing you'll be capturing from. (But I think you can uncheck that option later. Not sure..)

I don't see anywhere in Vegas or ATI to change capture inputs. When I'm in Vegas and go into Capture I only get a drop down menu that has ATI T200 AVStream Analog Capture only. There's no other option I checked the preferences to change it and didnt see any other place to alter it. No where that I can browse to point it to ATI.

I'm wondering if it's the ATI driver that's not right for the TV Tuner. I upgraded my Catalyst drivers & the devices all changed names in Device Manager. It was listed as TV, but with the updated driver it's the ATI T200 Unified AVStream.

Sorry to be such a pain. And thanks for your help!

Someone else had a driver related issue that might be a bit similar. It's discussed in this thread.

As far as not being able to change capture inputs, see this thread.

Thanks Jayster. I checked out both threads & while they experience my issue, it's stil slightly different.

In Vegas when I launch the Capture Video & choose external, I am able to capture from my DV camera. I am not able to capture from the ATI card though. It gives me the message the other person got about not being on. The goal is to capture from VHS & the ATI is my only input option. In Vegas I have the Capture External selected and it points to the VidCap60.EXE file.

I think my issue is an ATI issue. They write sloppy drivers. When I updated them to the latest version they changed the Driver from WDM to the ATI T200 AVStream Analog Capture. I will update them again to see if it's better or roll back the driver if that doesn't work.

I have 3 different ATI AIW cards on 3 different machines (ATI AIW Radeon, ATI AIW 9700 Pro, and the ATI AIW 800). I've used the AIW for years. Just use the included ATI TV capture application.

Click on the source and change it from TV to line input (hook the VCR RCA to the line input, or the coaxel (then use TV input). Then capture using one of the preferred capture options.

I created my own best setting for capture. I clicked on on the checkbox on the bottom left of the TV application to launch the TV Setup. Then I selected Map Preset. There is a pre-set option for AVI Recording, VGA Resolution (uses AVI), etc. Click on the Right Mouse button and select "New" and then set whatever format and parameters you prefer.

That's it. Then I select my custom option as the default capture within the Recording Preset, roll the VHS tape and then press capture. Works like a charm.

Have you ever gotten one of the AVI codecs to work? I've tried MainConcept DV, and HuffYUV, and I've never gotten a capture to work at 720x480 29.97 without dropping frames or without terrible audio sync problems. The MPEG2 capture works just fine. I updated the drivers countless times.

i used to capture to huffy all the time (DV can't encode fast enough, don't bother). i just captured to a seperate HD from my main drive & had no problems at all.

defragging is important though. gotta keep the capture drive defragged (for avi capture).
