CD Burning Issue in Vegas

Curt wrote on 5/5/2005, 12:58 PM
I've had this problem ever since I upgraded to Vegas 5 last year.

When I burn a CD in Vegas, whenever I select 8x speed, it automatically changes to 4x when it does the burn, thus taking twice as long. It does this whether I'm burning a multitrack mix with plug-ins galore or just a single mono file.

I'm using a P4/Win XP with 512 RAM, 7200RPM drives, and a Sony DRU-510A DVD/CD burner (which I purchased because it was on the Hardware Compatability list).

Help?

Are you using 8x media? The burner will read a media code and set itself accordingly.

At this very moment, I am using Memorex CD-R's that, according to their labeling, are rated up to 52x.

I've had this problem with just about every media I've used.

I know this isn't an answer to your problem...however...

burning audio CD is much more reliable at 4X than any speed faster.

I have the same burner and I can change various speeds. I don't know if it is a Vegas or burner problem.

Have you tried a different brand of CD-Rs?

As I mentioned earlier, the problem occurs no matter what brand of media I use.

Granted, burning at 4x is best for audio, and perhaps the software is defaulting to 4x for that very reason; but when I need to burn a one-off scratch demo, or something like that, it sure would be nice to just burn it at 8x.

Each particular system will perform differently but the current defacto standard for burning masters is usually x8. However the newer and better burners, the Plextor Premium for example, with good media can burn audio at 48 with error rates well within redbook standards. In fact the error rate differences on my Plextor Premium burning at 8 or 48 are simply insignificant.

O.K. so that still doesn't explain why my system could burn at 8x when running Vegas 3, but can't when running Vegas 5. Incidentally, I upgraded my system when I upgraded Vegas.

You're correct, this does not explain why you can't burn at 8x. I burn 8x in Vegas 5 quite a bit (pretty much my default for audio). I can only suggest that you check for burner firmware updates and also contact Sony support directly. Although they are clearly monitoring these forums, they are rarely responding to these kinds of posts anymore (at least since the release of Vegas 6).
