Yes, that's to check for updates from SoFo for your particular product(CDA, SF, Acid,etc.).
You can de-activate it in(I think) "preferences". I think you remove the checkmark next to the "check for updates" selection.
Maybe someone can step in if they have the exact location/headings.
I didn't say it was; just odd that it attempts to connect at each and every startup. Like most of the best things in life, once a week is probably sufficient ;-)
"Hardly. Would anybody run software like this on a PC connected to the net ?"
I do it all the time NOW. Computers are fast enough now, to burn CD's and still be on the net. I have clients all the time, say to me, "Hey, while we're waiting for that CD to finish burning, can you goto this website and check something out for me?" I believe it's called "multi-tasking" and ALL computers are capable of it. Even when I'm working on my own personal stuff, I will start to burn a CD and then come to these forums and answer a few questions. I guess I feel like I'm not being productive or entertained enough, just sitting there watching a burn process meter.
Call me paranoid if you like, but my audio work computers are not connected to the net. I just can't afford the added risk, or the processing payload to ensure security.
I found out on Windows XP that the overload and security were not a problem at all.
I can hardly see the CPU use of the connection with the XP firewall and internet sharing (I have a DSL connection with an USB modem).
I never had problems running Sonar with low latency and keeping the internet connection on. The XP scheduling is doing pretty fine !
