Cell Phone Video to DVD - Black Bar on Right!?!

PeterWright wrote on 12/9/2014, 4:04 AM
My daughter has asked me to put some video and stills from a mobile phone onto DVD to send to her in-laws in Holland for Christmas. The stills look fine, and so does the video that was shot "Landscape"

BUTTTTTTTTTTT

Several video clips were shot in Portrait mode, and no matter how I try, I cannot get rid of a big black bar down the right hand side of the frame.

I have set Project properties to the DVD output, and with each of the "Portrait" clips, I have used Pan/Crop to Match Output Aspect, and chosen the best part of the "vertical" video frame to put in my frame.

In the Pan Crop Window it looks fine - the resolution allows me to zoom in without losing quality, and the dotted lines are all within the shot video frame, but in Preview there is a thick black bar down the right side. Even if I zoom in well clear of the shot frame edges, the black bar remains stubbornly static no matter what I try.

Does anyone please have any idea what is happening here?

Thanks for any help.

Here's a screen shot:

- Sorry, tried using (Square Bracket) img=(my dropbox URL)], but the pic does not appear, including when I remove the "s" from https. Some days nothing seems to work!

Have you checked for any track motion key frame or pan crop key frame?

The pan/crop is @ 1080x607. DVD is 720x480. I'm betting, even accounting for aspect ratios, the pan/crop of the pic is wrong. You'd want to use the 16:9 preset for pan/crop.

Maybe some track motion too. Can't see the rest of the project or the track settings.

Your screen shot of the Pan/Crop dialogue box doesn't show an expanded 'Source' selection. Have you tried changing the 'Maintain Aspect Ratio' selection?

And as per The HappyFriar, try the 16:9 preset. I've found that using a preset and then adjusting framing usually eliminates the black bar problem, though the black bars I've encountered are symmetrical, not one-sided as in your case.

Thanks all - I thought I was losing it - it was Track Motion, which I thought I had keyframed for something at the end of the project, but ........

Once again, thankful for this forum!!!!
