Certification tour

Surprised I haven't seen any talk about the first couple set of Vegas certification classes -- there's a non-disclosure agreement involved, perhaps? If so, say no more.

Anyhow, I just registered for the Orlando seminar. Gulp. I don't use Vegas professionally, but I'd like to someday, and I'm pretty sure I could've passed the level one exam without a course. So I'm plunging into the level two and hoping I can keep up with the class. If nothing else, I should learn and get hands-on experience with stuff I haven't done yet on my own.

Quick question for those who've registered:

I signed up a bit late (today, course starts in three days), and the e-mail I received said I'd get "more details" a week before the course. In case they've already sent out "more details" to the rest of the class and I don't get anything else before Thursday, is there anything important that I need to know?

And, any idea who the teach will be in Orlando? Just curious.

Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,

No non-disclosure, it's just been a very busy week. I'm sure you'll seen something shortly from VASST in response to your registration.

I've been fortunate enough to man the Vegas User class while our Jeffrey Fisher has taken the Vegas Editor classes. This has been an absolute blast to be involved with and the support from Sony has been stellar as well. Michael Bryant, Director of Product Marketing for Sony was with us in Chicago and I think the feeling all around is "it's about time..."

I want to personally thank all of those who have attended both the User and Editor classes thus far (Chicago and Los Angeles) We've had a great time and interesting enough, most attendees have not ever been to or have been very little to the Sony forums. Hopefully we'll see them come aboard. I'm sure I can speak for everyone involved both at the Sony / VASST level as well as those who have attended that it's been informative and worthwhile for all.

We're looking forward to Orlando later this week and New York next week. Looking forward to meeting you in a few days.

Mannie forwarded the one-week-notice e-mail soon after I posted my previous message. Guess they're looking out for stragglers like me!

Thanks, though! See you there.

Geez, all that fun in Orlando and I'm overseas. Rob, you'll find Jeffrey to be an excellent instructor. I've taken several of his classes in the past and always walk away with a brain full of ideas and papers full of notes.

Question about the practical test. Since there's two or more ways to do most things in Vegas, is the result what's being judged or the process? In other words, do you have to demonstrate the "official" method to pass?

For example, I skip the trimmer and edit right on the timeline. Two methods, same results.

Vegas has a trimmer? :)

Vegas has a Timeline? oh . .is THAT what it's called .. . huh, I use it to store my creativity, sliced and diced from the slick "Trimmer" - ;-)

The end result is what is used for the test, but you do need to demonstrate at least a working knowledge of the test-related tools. How you achieve the end result however, is your decision.

Jeffrey turned out not only to be an excellent instructor but also to be a hoot, as well. ;) The class was very informative and a lot of fun. And I think I even passed. <g>

Big thanks to Jeffrey and also to Mannie and Cheno and whoever I didn't actually run into but who made the tour possible. I would've liked to have met the legendary Spot, but I've a feeling I'll be hitting more seminars / classes in the future. So maybe in the future. This was my toe in the water, so to speak, in hopefully moving from "fiddle with Vegas just for fun" to "using Vegas to get back some of that money I've put into it. .. and still using it for fun, too!"

No doubt the class was awesome and so was Jeffery!
Excelent instructor like Spot , and Mannie always has thing running smooth as silk.
While every VASST event I have attended has been great , they just seem to be getting better and better.
The Cert class is no exception, and for those of you considering taking it I recc it highly. Even those that are quite proficient with Vegas will see the test is not as easy as you may think, it is a good test of not only your Vegas program skills but organization and time management. Being a timed test and the way the content is laid out I think it truly makes the certification mean something, not just "given" because you attended a class.
Jeffery is complete in his coverage of the material that will be on the test, which is great , even some basic things you "knew" but may have forgotten he covers well. Did for me anyway...

One caveat wich I mention in another post, is the online test, BEWARE! if you go back and review your answers by hitting the previous button on the test page all true false question marks are gone! I had to scramble to remark them once I realized this.

But all in all the class and Certification I think are great.!!!
Yes I aggree, that a piece of paper does not make you a great editor.
But it does help establish the fact that you can demonstrate your abilty and knowlege of the program and sets a certian bar if you will.
Just as diplomas, and degrees do in other fields.

I feel that the Vegas Certification idea is a good one (in theory).
-It shows proficiency using Vegas.

does that mean:
Vegas will finally be taken as a Professional NLE?
Studios/Post Production Facilities will start using Vegas?

or does that simply mean:
I'll be a Vegas Certified Freelance Editor?
I'll have to start my own Production Company if I want to get paid using Vegas?

Here in Southern CA all I see are requests for Avid & FCP Editors.
Luckily I also edit on both of these and am employed as an In House Avid Adrenaline Editor. Otherwise I would starve trying to find a Vegas Editor position. I don't see that changing even with Vegas Cetification although Avid or FCP Certification can land you a job the next day.

Please don't take this as a negative post but more-so an inquisitive one. I absolutely Love Vegas ever since Vegas Audio & Vegas Video. I know its power but I don't feel the rest of the Production/Post world is accepting it.

I agree it probably wont land you a job,, but no matter how much you know these classes seem good to me as a brush up, or to learn new features ,learn different workflows etc. Always good to see things from another perspective.
Hell, even Tiger Woods has a coach
