Changing capture format?

I'm currently capturing my 90min 8mm tapes from my Sony camcorder.

I have a 2nd spare 60gig drive which I can capture to, however, capturing using the Nvidia WDM drivers through my GF4 ti4600 only ever capturs using the Microsoft YUV .avi format. I notice TMPGenc does not like opening these sometimes - I have the latest reg'd version as well.

So, 30mins of footage takes around 37gig!

Is there any way to capture the clips in a different format or is this option only available when I come to use Firewire connection with my new model?

Thanks!

Fedorov.

When you switch to capturing through firewire you'll be capturing DV .avi files at about 225MB/minute, so 30 minutes will be about 6.7GB.

Thanks, so because I'm currently using analogue I can't reduce my .avi files I presume?

I don't know anything about the current capture hardware/software you're using, so i can't tell you what options might be available. However, if you want to take a little more time and still have very good smaller files, you could render your catpures to DV .avi files and then delete the original captures. This will probably be a very fast process and you can even pre-trim as you go. The result will be that you shrink the files down to 225MB/minute and still retain very good quality.

Thanks for the advice, like I said I don't seem to be able to select via the Nvidia WDM drivers anything other than YUV format - which means I have to do each 90min tape in 3 chunks! :)

I shall try rendering as DV then at least I can keep all my parts on disk at the same time.

Thanks.
