Changing time selection tool default?

I have scene detect on when capturing. Then I drag all clips in order onto the timeline. I do this to see what clips are likely to be considered for the final cut & eliminate clips that wont be used under any circumstances. I double clip on the first clip, which creates a time selection that matches exactly the clip & play the clip. I look at the first clip & decide to either keep all, some or none of the clip at least temporarily. I either delete or shorten some clips as I go. When you press delete with auto ripple on the clips to the cursors right all move to the left & the time selection tool stays in the position of the last cut. This selection tool to still set for the length of the now deleted clip. Is it possible to set this tool to default to the length of the next clip? If this happened it would make it quicker to run through every clip & delete all of the unnecessary clips before editing really begins.

I can't tell the answer to your question, but here is the procedure, I adapted - completely mouse free:

I usually paste all my clips to the media pool. Then I hit <return> to bring it to the trimmer, figure out the portion to keep, hit the A key and it's in the timeline.
Then alt-5 to get back to the media pool. Arrow down to the next clip. And round and round... Seems quite efficient to me to sort out unwanted events and portions of them.

Another thing is to walk quickly through the media pool, just by hitting the down arrow key. With auto play enabled, the preview is there instantly (as opposed to the explorer window). Usually, I do this as a very first step for a quick sort out of the really worst events.
