Chapter marker blues - audio only

DelCallo wrote on 6/21/2005, 6:45 PM
I have a 3.5 hr audio only mp3 created in Vegas6. Placed all my markers in V6, rendered with setting to copy markers turned on, ran a script that also found those markers, trying to bring all to the DVDA3 timeline so that I will have chapter markers for each tune in the file - still no joy. What am I doing wrong?

To the best of my knowledge, MP3 files do not have the capability to hold marker information. AVI and MPEG2 files do. (In which case, Vegas should probably disable that checkbox when outputing to files that do not support marker storage.) Render to an AVI or MPEG2 and use that for your project.

BTW, whatever you render to from Vegas, DVDA wil not put MP3s on a disc for you. It will convert the audio to PCM or AC3, whichever you've set it to do.

Ok, Thanks.
I'll re-render to MPEG2.

I've tried AC3 - no luck with chapter markers, there, either.

I can't be the only one having this problem, right?

I don't think it comes up very often because, frankly, most people are using DVDA to make video DVDs, not audio-only ones.

As I said, to the best of my knowledge, markers can only be stored in AVI or MPEG2 files (perhaps other video files as well). Personally, I think your best bet would be to put some arbitrary content on a video track and then your music on an audio track (all this in Vegas). The video could be a still image, if you want, or some video background. Render the project out to an MPEG2 file (if you use a single still image, or video you can set the bitrate really, really low). That's your video file for DVDA. Then render the same project out to AC3. That's your audio. The markers will be stored in the MPEG2 file, but as long as you use both files in your DVDA project, your chapters will show up.

A DVD has to have audio andvideo -- even if the video is just a still image or blank space.

Interesting suggestion to add some token video to the project. I hadn't thought of that.
Will give it a try.
Thanks.

Rob:
Your suggestion above solved my problem. I inserted a short blank video event on the timeline in V6, rendered to MPEG2, brought that file to the DVDA3 timeline in a "SINGLE MOVIE" project, and all chapter markers are there - preview allowed me to navigate from chapter to chapter at will, just as I would expect things to work.

I knew it had to be something simple.

Thanks for your advice.
