Chapter marker problem...newbie alert!

Very new to Vegas "video" and DVD architect.

I have just made my first Menu driven DVD using Vegas/DVD Arch 2. I filmed a singer live with my new sony minidv camera, captured it into Vegas and added text tracks and edits, cutting each song into its own file and rendering individually. (usually I had rendered as a whole multiple song file, then set chapters in DVD Arch).

I then opened DVD architect and right clicked the files and selected the add media button. Okay, got all 13 video files in there and arranged them. Everything went well until I played back, then I noticed that I could not "skip to the next track". When I tried, nothing happened, "chapter one" appeared in the upper corner, but it would not advance to the next track.

So I put in chapter markers, that showed up on the timeline as 1:2, 1:3 etc. Upon playback, it still would not skip to the next track but would at least go back to the main menu so i could select another chapter.

What am i missing here?

Since you added them as individual files, they are not "chapters" -- they are each individual movies. There is no standard behavior among DVD players regarding what to do when you try to "skip" between individual movies. Some players will go to the "next" movie, some will go back to the menu, some just won't go anywhere because they don't think there's anywhere to go.

Is there a reason you chose this procedure rather than your usual one of keeping all the songs in a single file?

My advice would be to either go back to Vegas and use your usual procedure of rendering the whole video to a single file or to use DVD Architect's music compilation feature to put all the clips into a single movie. Alernatively, you could use End actions to link each file to the one that supposed to follow it, but this still won't make them chapters -- just several movies strung together. You may or may not experience the same problem using End Actions.

DVD Architect 3 has a feature called Playlists which makes this simpler, but I haven't used it yet, and I'm not sure it would help with the chapter issue.

By the way, if you just bought Vegas+DVD recently, you should contact Sony customer service; you might be eligible for a free upgrade to the new versions which came out last month.

Thanks Rob,

I've had Vegas5/DVD Arch for about a year now...no free upgrade.

I had a feeling this was the answer. I have done it the other way...one big file and mark chapters in Arch. Just wanted to do it this way, so I could re-arrange the order or cut songs later if i wanted.

I already went back to vegas to do it the other way in case this was the answer.

Thanks again.

I am happy to report that, since I first purchased Vegas5+DVDA approximately 60 days before they released Vegas6+DVDA3, Sony did provide a free upgrade to the new version.

You will need to Fax them a copy of your original invoice and ask them it they will provide a free update.

I was very pleased with their quick response.
