Chapter markers supported in timeline burned DVDs?

KenJ62 wrote on 12/26/2010, 11:34 PM
Having moved on completely to version 10 and removed version 9 - I recall in version 9 being able to burn a DVD from the timeline including markers. Naming the markers was of course unnecessary with no menu but I have menu-less disks which respond to the backward/forward chapter commands in my DVD players. Now in version 10 my DVDs burned from the timeline with markers do not respond to the forward/backward commands. Has this capability been lost in version 10?

I'm surprised by no replies! Has no one tried this?

In version 9 I was able to add unnamed markers to my timeline, burn a DVD from the timeline and have the DVD player forward/backward buttons respond properly. This was a great feature for skipping through a 30 minute program by placing markers every five minutes.

Markers should still add chapter points on your dvd. When rendering, make sure the option to include markers is still checked. Also, the marker information is stored in a separate file. Don't move the rendered file when making the dvd.

I have not used any version of VMS before 10, but confirm unnamed markers do not appear to work.

"Save media markers in project file" box was indeed checked. So, I don't know about the Pro version but in the Studio HD version it no longer works.

I thought it was a great feature. Knock off a quick DVD with three different videos to give to friends/family. Or just put markers in every 3 - 5 minutes so people can zoom through easier.

Sigh. I guess I will stuff the SCS feedback box. Thanks for the replies.

Hmmm ... works perfectly here. Win 7 64 Pro, VMS 10.

Really! I'm running Windows 7 32 bit.

You can always make your DVD from DVDA instead of the timeline. The default is with a menu, but it is *very* easy to get rid of it .. I do it all the time .. if you don't want one.

You can then put your chapter marks (named or not) where ever you want in DVDA.

Heh, heh.....

Kinda misses the point. This capability is desired for quick, one-off DVDs - with emphasis on quick. Why else would you want to burn a disk from the timeline?

The neat thing about the feature is that you still get chapter points - which is different from other editors (and now VMS10). Throw a recent video or collection of clips (ahem, events) on the timeline and give the viewer the ability to navigate quickly to other portions of the disk.

I think this capability got overlooked. Thanks for the pointer though!

Ooops, missed the "from the timeline" part of the original post. I (and also JetDV's post propably) was referring to rendering with chapter markers from VMS10, and then burning from DVDA, which does work.

Yes, I meant burning from DVD Architect.

I hope my own experience helps.

I also burned a DVD (without a scene selection menu) and noticed that the chapter marker was not applied. So this morning, I watched a preview on DVD Architect and nothing happened when I pressed the skip button on the remote. Then I went to the video's timeline and clicked the "load markers" icon. This loaded the marker that I had inserted in Movie Studio. Then I watched the preview again and was able to skip to the marker.

It seems like you would have to manually load the markers if you are not creating a scene selection menu.

That isn't my experience but, in any case, doesn't really bear on the issue of DVDs burnt from the VMS timeline.

Here is the response from SCS Support:

"Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9 did not have an option to burn directly from the timeline to a DVD (just Blu-ray), so you were most likely using the Make Movie dialog. This functionality is still present in that dialogue in Platinum 10. Then, you can use DVD Architect to make a single movie DVD with these markers intact."

So, once again my memory has failed me! Apparently, the Platinum versions of VMS are able to make a Blu-ray disk from the timeline - and they will be able to include timeline markers. Version 10 continues the support for this.

Next time I want to knock out a simple, no menu Blu-ray disk for 3 dollars I will keep this in mind! The Make Movie dialog for DVDs leads you right through sending the results to DVDA Studio where, indeed, you can make a no-menu single movie with working markers.

Ken - try this in VMS 10

Go to the TOOLS menu and choose Burn Disc
Then select one of the choices
This by passes DVD Architect
I have options to burn to DVD and Bluray

I've never tried using markers with this feature. I do have the Platinum version so I don't know if this isn't in the standard version.
