Choppy Audio

I am putting together a video using .MTS and .MOV files. I am also using high resolution .jpeg photos. I am also adding music files. I am using Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12.0 (64bit) on a Windows 7 64Bit, Dell, with 8 Gigs of RAM. I rendered movie as .AVI file and the music was extremely choppy. My goal is to show this video from my laptop, through a HD projector, onto a movie screen. What is the best way to render such a project, and why is my audio choppy? I have never had a problem with audio before.

Don't use AVI.
Use MP4.

But I can't play back .MP4 files on Windows Media Player, which is what I have to use to show the final output through a laptop, onto a big screen.

Use VLC Player

... Or upgrade Windows Media Player to v. 12
