choppy when I fast forward

When I used to use the L key to fast forward through my timeline I had no problem flying through my videos. Now, it's very choppy and can't catch up with itself. Can anyone lend some suggestions on how I can clear my memory to edit fast again?

1. Set project properties to match the video.

2. Set preview quality to "Preview/Auto."

3. Right click on preview and turn off "Scale video ..."

4. If using 8.x, make sure project is set to 8-bit, not 32-bit.

5. Use DV AVI, or Cineform AVI. Using MPEG-2, AVCHD, or m2t (HDV) files on the timeline slows down, especially when scrubbing.
