Chroma Key V Difference Mask?

Wondering why everyone gets in a lather over CKs when it seems to me that a difference mask means you don't even need a screen. Or if you did use one the masking could perhaps mean the lighting etc wasn't such an issue.
Maybe I've missed something, maybe someone knows more about this and can educate us all a bit more.

Been wondering that my self lately
Best I can figure - if you're using a static cam and just having the person move - then a difference mask might be the answer. If, however, you are moving the cam - you'd have to shoot the exact same movement without the person as with the person (I think). Mind you - this is all speculation, for all my figuring, I haven't just gone out and done it ;)

And that's beyond the obvious - that you'd have to do more capturing to have the BG to difference.

I assume you have looked at this site:

Two Cats

Pretty amazing stuff using the difference mode. It was done by one of the Sony wizards, and I get really envious of his talents every time I look at it.

It was that .veg that got me thinking and the work of that Danish guy who made extensive use of difference masks. As Frigid pointed out though if the camera moves then you need an exact background plate which you need a lot of expensive gear to do, unless you're into rolling your own.
