chromakey...

tumbleweed2 wrote on 11/17/2008, 8:41 AM

I just started chromakeying w/VP8... I ran into an issue & I'm wondering if it's just my setup, or something thats not supposed to work. I'm using a green screen & I'm selecting a range of green( using the eyedropper & using that to make a rectangle on the preview screen ) , & when I do this, Vegas 8 locks up... I'm using HDV footage... I learned this on Vasst's website. Kolbo's tut I think...

Now I can key with the eyedropper by clicking just once to select a the color, but I'm unable to select a range of that color.

Can anyone verify that this happens to them also? Or are you not able to do this in VP8. I know I was able to do this in Vegas 6 with DV & HDV, using a range of green.

The Chroma Keyer plug-in doesn't allow you to select a range of values, only a single value. From there, you can adjust the low/high threshold to create a range of values.

The Color Corrector (secondary) does allow you to select a range of values. There's a good tutorial here:

If you click-drag, it will pick up a range.

Thanks for the replys...

Yes, if you click & drag it should give you a range... but that's not happening for me, well at least it locks Vegas up... also it shows all of the media on the TL, as offline when Vegas locks. The drive is still there & functional( internal, but not system drive)...

I'm using 8.0c on Vista 32... is there anyone who can test this to see if it happens to them?...

"If you click-drag, it will pick up a range."

Actually, it doesn't create a range. It finds the average of the values within the selection rectangle - still a single value.

But by adjusting the High/Low threshold sliders, you can create a range of values that will be keyed out.

I used Cinegobs keyer to key some footage I shot last week. I like it a lot better than the one in Vegas... and it's free. Make sure you read the basic tutorial (3 minutes) and you are good to go.

Edit: The link.

I do appreciate the feedback.. but... I'm still in a quandry about when I click & drag... It locks up vegas & all the media shows its offline for some unknown reason...

is anyone able do this without a lockup, or is it something the way my system is setup...

I can understand the average value reasoning, as it makes sense, it's just when i try to click & drag to create the rectangle, it locks up Vegas & every bit of media, even titles, shows it's offline, even though the media is on different drives.... ????

OK, maybe a "range" wasn't totally accurate, but it does key more than one specific color. If I have a green screen that is not well lit, click on 1 spot and I have some spots not keyed, if I drag, they all key. So maybe it's a range in a range.

Turn off aero glass and see if that solves the range problem.

Turning off Aero glass didn't resolve my issue, but thanks for the suggestion...

I'm suprised no one has responded with a test of their own HDV green screen, & trying to drag click a range of values to key, to see if vegas stalls & all media goes offline... Oh well, I'll continue to try & solve this, but no luck so far....

I have done green key shots in AVCHD no problem

I understand that the problem you are having is not the keying out of the green but rather your PC IS locking up
When you select a range of green to key out

What I have learned from this forum is

1 first apply chroma blur to get rid of pixel edge
2 then apply saturate green from sec colour corrector
3 then apply chromakey

Or do a garbage mask which allows for colour correction

Actually I have done the click-drag for the key many many times, no problems at all. Hope you get it working, that's a bummer.

Thanks again everyone...

the pc doesn't lock, vegas just stalls & i can't do anything but close the project... well, if you're able to click & drag, then something is amiss with my setup...

my screen exhibits some odd behavior though, like it's having an issue of redrawing itself, as the click & drag box turns black. Maybe this is the direction I'll head 'cause it might be video card related. Won't know 'till I try later on, to change drivers & other settings....

Vegas 8.0c and Vegas 8.1 on Vista 64. No lock up or stall when selecting a region with the Chroma Key. 8.0 does not properly select a region on 64 bit Vista but it does not lock or stall. 8.0 isn't Vista ready. I haven't test 8.0c today so I can not tell aount that version specifically. All of my work has been HDV

The only problem I had was aero glass. It would always fill in the select area with black. Other than that everything works.

Ok, I finally got Aero turned off(thought I did before), & you're right, it solved my black box issue, thanks...

but all my timeline media still goes offline when I drag & click a box on my greenscreen?... I'll put this to rest for now, thanks one & all for your help...
