Cineform

Does using cineform eliminate Vegas locking up on m2t files from captured HDV? (currently I have to turn "preview waveform" off to avoid locking up.

If it does, do I have to recapture?

Does the current version of cineform work seamlessly with Vegas 7d in Windows XP SP 2?

I've been using Cineform intermediates ever since I went to HDV and I've never had Vegas lock up due to a file. If you have m2t files already on your computer, you don't have to recapture, you can just choose the "Convert" option. You can download the Cineform trial and try all the options without any restrictions. If nothing else, you have the converted files on your system even if you choose not to purchase the program. I now have Vegas 8, but I didn't have any problem with 7d.

Is this the same type of thing as Gearshift? Which works better, easier?

The nice thing about the purchased version of Cineform is that you get the "High" quality option as opposed to only medium in the non-purchased version. I've noticed a subtle difference when using the two settings. Also the purchased version is supposed to use a move advance form of direct show creating smaller files. Check out the Cineform website FAQs on Vegas. Another nice feature is direct cineform conversion on firewire capture.

I've never had a lock up due to a clip either. David from Cineform over at the DVinfoNet forums is also very helpful in answering questions. I don't regret going Cineform NEO it's a good product and worth the money.

Gotta admit, never a problem with Cineform NEO. Darryl

CClub,

Just started dabbling with these things. I have some M2T files off a CF card from my S270U. The "Convert" option you mentioned - option in what? NEO, or Vegas.

Can't seem to find it in either one.

Have installed both the free NEO player and the trial NEO-HDV.
Thanks,
Tom

Tom,
I haven't used the trial in some time since I purchased Neo, but if it gives you the "Cineform HDLink" application, in the application window it states "Source" along the top and you choose the Capture Source there. Then below that are three Tabs: Capture, Convert, and Export. Doesn't the trial version of HDLink have those three options?

CClub,.
I installed the trial, tried it and it said I didn't have an HD source connected so I let it go. I used the installed codec to create an intermediate file by rendering out an M2T from the timeline and played with that a bit.

Now, starting up HDLink, it's out of trial time. I'll install it on another computer and give it a go. Thx for the pointer, tho'.

Tom,

With HDLink you can convert directly to Cineform Intermediate files when capturing via firewire. If you don't have Cineform you have to capture M2T files first and then convert in Vegas or using Gearshift. (It doubles your time)

OK, I took the plunge and bought it.

What about the CineForm Encoder Options in HD Link Prefs?

"faster exports but file sizes are larger" Exports to what? Does this mean Renders?

"Can I mix HD and DV content in an HD project?

Yes it is possible, but Premiere will resize the DV video to fit the HD project and will likely stretch the picture. What you will want to do is to convert your footage using HDLink and up-scale the resolution to the size of your HDV or HD project."

So if I want to mix in some 16:9 DV I capture it in Vegas and then uprez with HD Link?

Never had a problem with Cineform Neo but I did have a problem with an m2t (tp) file created by MY-HD-120 card trying to get it into V8b. It heemy-haawed around and finally went onto the timeline after I yelled at it. Translation---after a freeze up and open up V8b again it worked.

JJK,

I have found that any recording from the MyHD card that contains a subchannel will not open in Vegas. All of my locals stations are running HD, but only the CBS affiliate here is running a single, full-bandwidth HD channel. For the other channels, I usually just get into VideoReDo and strip any subchannels from the recording and it opens fine in Vegas.

***I forget exactly but I always use this option. David from Cineform over at DVInfoNet asnwered it in Cineform forum.

***You can mix it with no problems. The way I handle it at present is to set my project to 1440x1080 HDV and bring in an DV footage along with the HDV cineform files. When I want to use DV footage I choose "match aspect ratio in the Event/Pancrop of the clip. Everything I do right now is delivered on SD so it converts fine. Once I start delivering on Blue Ray I may revise this process and either use Cineform to upcovert or Red Giant's Instant HD Pro.

Does Cineform actually upcovert DV to HDV REZ in a usable way?

I have not tried it but I've heard comments that it works well.
JHendrix wrote on 6/21/2008, 10:43 PM
That would be nice.

Anyone have the settings they have used to upcovert DV to HDV REZ in a usable way?
