Cineform Codec

Last week I ordered Vegas Pro 8 (ordered the disc version). While I was waiting for it to arrive I downloaded the Vegas Pro 8c TRIAL version and then when the Vegas Pro 8 disc came I entered the serial number in the trial version to register it.

I can't find the Cineform Codec. I was under the impression that the Cineform Codec was included in Vegas Pro 8, but I can't find it.

Am I not looking in the right place? Is it on the disc and not in the download? And if so, how do I install just the .dll file that is the codec?

Thanks,

John

EDIT: Using Search, I see that it will only do 1440 x 1080 so maybe it isn't even worth installing?

It's installed- it is just labeled Intermediary as opposed to Cineform. It is under Avi.

Thanks Jeremy,

I see it now. If you choose one of the HDV intermediate templates and click on Custom / Video it appears there as Cineform HD Codec V 2.8

Thanks again Jeremy.

John, so it that rendering in HDV or HD?

craftech wrote on 3/26/2009, 9:25 AM
Actually Jay, now that I know it was in the drop down list under "Custom", I notice that it appears for both HD and HDV, but as far as I know it will only render to 1440 x 1080.

Yeah, when I try to render 1920 x 1080 progressive I get an error.

Right. The CineForm codec that ships with Vegas Pro is limited to HDV 1440x1080 PAR 1.3333. If you want full HD 1920x1080 PAR 1.0000 you need to at least buy Neo Scene, which is relatively inexpensive and allows you to use CineForm outside of Vegas like when rendering to/from After Effects and other applications. Well worth the money.

The version number of the Cineform codec which comes with Vegas is v2.8, the current version shipping with NEO Scene is 4.8. The Vegas version hasn't been updated in at least a couple of years.

Thanks for the info, Johnny and John. That pretty well explains it.

What's the difference between NEO HD and NEO Scene (it's not clear to me)?

From the Cineform NEO Scene FAQ:

Neo Scene is designed to offer high-quality conversions of HDV and AVCHD source material into 10-bit CineForm Intermediate files, the same files used in feature film projects. This results in much higher visual fidelity and higher editing performance than can be achieved using native files from the camera.

Neo HD and Neo 4K have additional features including the following:

support for CineForm's Active Metadata architecture for renderless color workflows

conversion of additional camera formats: XDCam HD/EX, HVX200 (P2), Canon 5D Mk II, or general AVI/MOV formats

Additonal pre-processing options including:

spatial resampling (e.g. 960x720 --> 1280x720)

speed change (e.g. 60p --> 24p slow motion or 24p <--> 25p)

image flip (for when using 35mm adapters)

AVI <--> MOV rewrapping (for moving CineForm files to/from a Mac)

hardware capture through component, HD-SDI, or HDMI inputs using Blackmagic or AJA cards

"Filmscan" compression modes which offer less compression for uncompressed sources

CineForm DirectShow encoder. This allows many third-party products to call CineForm's 10-bit encoder

Thanks, again, John.
