Cineform Codec not working in Vegas 8.1

I recently posted a message to the people at Cineform asking them to get their Cineform codec working with Vegas 8.1. This is how they replied:
--------------
Its not up to us. We provided Sony with what they needed but they didn't implement it. You'll need to use 8.0c or wait until version 9.0.
--------------
Does Sony care that a 64 bit version of Vegas that doesn't support codecs and plugins used within Vegas 8.0c is close to useless?

Vegas v8.1 is essentially a v1.0 release and is not quite as functional as v8.0c. It was also provided to us for FREE. If your project can be edited using only the tools contained in Vegas itself and don't need Cineform support, it is a perfectly functional NLE that can handle much larger projects than the 32-bit version and renders a bit faster as well. I use it often. By the way, did I mention it was FREE?

Either convert to Cineform MOV (Quicktime wrapper) or re-wrap the Cineform AVI as a Cineform MOV and then import the file into Vegas 8.1. Vegas 8.1 will open that just fine.

The 64 bit Vegas utilizes 32 bit codecs by spawning a 32 bit intermediate interface program. The interface program does not work with Cineform AVI files and imports only the audio track. BTW, you also would need to export the Cineform as a MOV file, but I can't honestly tell you, if that works correctly, since I've never tried it.

My advice is to just stick with the 32 bit Vegas 8.0c. The benefits of the 64 bit Vegas 8.1 are easily outweighed by all the drawbacks.

what does "it was provided to us FREE " mean ...
like we should have to pay for it ??
64bit was 1st spoken by Sony back at NAB & Vegas 7 ( as in a 64bit version would come out in V7) ..
then it was promised & demo'd at NAB with V8 ..
it's FREE and that's what they told us at NAB 2 years ago !!!
so i'm not so thankful for the FREE that isn't as functional as V8c ..
Vegas stared us out on cineform ( cineform connect) back when they introduced HDV ... so it seems they should provide a solution ( as in TODAY )

Db, I totally agree. I've been a Vegas user for some time now, paying for every upgrade since version 5. If a 64bit version is provided for us, it should be a functional version. Sony got me hooked on Cineform (it's a great intermediate codec!)... Not being able to use it (AVI version) in Vegas 8.1 is a total drawback.

And no, I don't want to rebundle all of my source clips into MOV container files. I like using VirtualDub and it needs AVI files.

Vegas 8.1 reminds me of Vista in Jan 07. An empty shell with no third party support.

Exactly how is this done?

I have 5D2 Canon footage that I have converted with Coneform Neo Scene and the files play real well in 8.0. But I want to play them in 8.1 in my Vista 64 bit.

What other software (if any) is needed? What's this re-wrapping in detail please?

Best & thanks in advance

Unfortunately, you can't do this rewrap with NEO Scene and you need NEO HD, as a minimum. NEO Scene is the "base model" in the Cineform software line, so to speak and has a lot of the options disabled. All the rewrap does is change the header information in the file from Microsoft Video for Windows format (AVI) to Apple Quicktime format (MOV). The actual audio and video content is unchanged.

My advice is to forget about Vegas 8.1, if you want to use Cineform.
