AVI files don't have a flag in the header that tells a program whether it's progressive or interlaced or the field order if it is interlaced. If you have rendered the AVI as progressive, then that's what it is. You will have to manually change the file's properties to progressive when you import it back into Vegas.

The same thing happens when I render interlaced to an AVI "progressive' out of Vegas. When I re-import this render it still indicates a field order. So should I change the properties after importing back into Vegas - just like from Cineform (above)? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Yes, if you know for certain that the source file is progressive, then just change the field order in the file's properties to "Progressive."
