64 bit Vegas 8.1 will not read Cineform 3.x AVI files properly and only produces the audio track. After some delving into the issue, it appears that Vegas 8.1 will use some 3rd party 32 bit VFW codecs and it does so by spawning a program FileIOSurrogate.exe, the same it does for the built-in 32 bit codecs. This has been posted here before. Unfortunately, this process does not work with Cineform AVI files, because the AVI reader plug in (aviplug.dll) that comes with Vegas 8.1 is a 64 bit plug in.
The workaround is to rewrap your Cineform AVI files as Cineform MOV files with Cineform HDLink (or just capture them that way). Vegas 8.1 will read these files properly (At least it does for me). You can also render out as Cineform 3.x, as long as you use the MOV wrapper, not AVI.
It's not a great workaround, as Vegas isn't all that good at editing MOV files, but at least it does allow those of you that want to use Cineform with Vegas 8.1, to do so.
