Clear selection

After making a selection if you decide not to use it what is the simplest way of clearing the selection?

Ignore it.

Or ... if you press the i key and then the o key you will create a new selection with a length of zero, which is effectively no selection.

Pressing I and O at the same point is a perfect solution to get rid of the selection. Thanks a lot for this practical answer.
