Client and server on same machine?

Folks -

I just installed my Vegas+DVD upgrade, and have been tracking the developments in the forum. Network rendering seems like a godsend for me.

Here's the problem:

I have two moderately fast machines (with a total of 8, oncluding 2 Linux servers on the network). The main advantage is that these two boxes are connected via a gigabit network, and it seems to make sense to use them in a server/client configuration.

I typically use my 2.4G system for Vegas & DVDA. My 3.0G system is usally used for music production (Sonar 3.1 and Cubase 2.02 SX). Because the music system is faster, if I'm not doing any music, I may use this machine to speed up video renders, although it is not its primary function.

Otherwise, I run the video operations on th 2.4G machine. I installed Vegas+DVDA updates on both machines, and then installed the 5.0a updates on both.

I then went back and tried to install the render-only clients on these machines, thinking that whichever machine is acting as the primary site/server, the other could act as a render only engine.

Apparently not. When I go back to re-run the install disk, it tells me that a newer version of the Vegas softare is already installed (5.0a), and then forces me to exit the installation utility.

I do have one other moderately speedy machine (2.0G) on the network, but it only has 512M RAM an it's on a 100 megabit segment that I can't easily migrate to a gigabit segment.

How can I get the render-only clients installed on the first two machines?

Anybody, or should I be calling Sony Support?

Uninstall Vegas on your music workstation then reinstall it and you'll
be given the option to install as a render-only client.

I did think abou that, but won't that inhibit my ability to use my faster music workstation as the occasional Vegas editing station?

Or can I install the network rendered first, and then reinstall 5.0 (5.0a)?

I'm afraid you will not be able to use a render-only installation for
both network rendering and occasional editing. Also, you can not
install render-only and "full" side-by-side.

This is a major bummer, because I believe this usage profile falls within the licensing agreement:

1) Vegas can be installed on multiple machines, but only in use on one

2) 2 additional render only network clients are supported under Vegas 5.0

Will you folks be addressing this?

Also - in a separate thread I heard that MPEG-2/AC-3 rendering isn't supported on the network clients - can this be correct? If so, it 'renders' them useless for DVD targeted projects.
