Clip eternally cloning - cannot delete

I have a short segment of audio on the timeline which was created by slicing a larger video clip. The intention was to delete this short clip of audio/video. The video deleted without a problem but I cannot remove the audio. I can select the clip and hit delete but it's still there. If I drag the audio clip along the timeline a clone of it remains in the original position - I can delete the clip I moved but it's repeatedly cloning from it's original position... I can't see any switches that might control such an action so I'm guessing maybe a bug in the project file. Has anyone seen anything like this or know how to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

Check to make sure the audio has been sliced. Sometimes when I slice one track the other does not slice leading to the problem you have described.

I just checked that and there appears to be a slice through the audio track as well - the clips have overlapped with a cross fade. Testing what you said a little earlier on the timeline it seems all of the audio up to this point has the cloning problem. I can delete audio from the track after the problem clip but everything before the problem clip is also cloning infinitely.

I've gone back to an earlier version of the project which doesn't have this problem so it's not the end of the world - but I'm really curious to find out what triggered it.

Any chance that the events are locked?

Select the event in question. Use the View menu to enable Edit Details and then Show: Selected Events. The event you selected should be the only event shown. Scroll to the right until you get to the "Lock" column. If there is a checkbox there, you can clear it. You should now be able to delete the event.

No they aren't locked, and I have also just done it again!! I'm not sure if this helps but the last entry in history is: Undo Add Media up to Cursor. But it won't let me undo this event. I can't seem to find any reference to this action in the help files either...
