Coating for Printed DVDs? Anybody know this?

They're new, so I doubt too many folks have experience.

I see they're made by Primera and Imation. I don't know anybody that raves about Imation DVD's. But I haven't heard anybody dissing them either, so who knows?

I just spray mine with purpose made lacquer.
But I did hear from a local importer that a new generation of DVDs would be arriving soon that were inkjet printable and gave a glossy finish, maybe that's part of this although I fail to see how this can work.
The finish has to be porous else the ink will just run off which means the water can get to the ink, dissolve it and make it run.

It might be relative to the newer powder coat paints which melt on to give the gloss.

I'd never even considered this......probably gives a nice polished look.

Is there a particular lacquer that is used? Is it just sprayed on?

Just a clear acrylic spray such as what you can find at most any hobby or paint store. Spend some time practicing to get the coating even. I like to do 2 light coats rather than just a single coat. Also make sure you have good ventilation.

Also be sure that the DVD is flat against the surface as any space will allow the acrylic to find its way to the burned side, which isn't good.

I have read that some people use hairspray. Less odor and works as well supposedly.

Stuff I use is made by Disc Print B.V. in The Netherlands.

I've used this not only for CD/DVD protection but also DVD slicks and photos.
If spraying 100s of DVDs by hand is a pain there are automated artcoat systems available that spray the stuff onto the disks as they travel along a conveyor.
