MJPEG and XVID are two different codecs.
Neither are included in Vegas.

XVID should be downloaded from its own site.
There are several MJPEG options available, some free, some paid.
If you just need to decode MJPEG, the MainConcept Demo is a good free choice.

Soory it toock me so long to post my reply to this post.

Here is the whole thing.

I need my Movie studio 8.0 C to be able to open M JPEG videos and I do have a program called Format Factory and it will let me make XviD MPEG 4 videos in it but I need the codec.

So I found
Combined-Community-Codec-Pack-2009-09-09.exe

and it sould have all the CODECs for my computer to playback the files I say above.

Now if I can playback files does this meen I can open them in Movie Studio

What is the source of your mjpeg files? A camera? What model?

I guess you didn't get your mjpeg issue resolved from two years ago:
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=12&MessageID=590622

I see that Format Factory will output to MPEG (MPG), why not output to MPEG?

My M JPEG is from a Digital Camara and I did have a codec from somwere and it did work but over time I gess it got un installed.

But anyway I just got the codec pack

Combined-Community-Codec-Pack-2009-09-09.exe

All diferant CODECs even M JPEG are in it is this just good for Playing or Encoding as well?

Or is that not how codecs work
MSmart wrote on 3/2/2010, 12:28 PM
Basically, yes, that's how they work...... as long as the application will support it.

Now that you got the codec pack, does VMS play your mjpeg files without having to convert them first?
thebrain900 wrote on 3/3/2010, 8:27 AM
I have the CODEC Pack that I listed above and it is for PLAY back.

Now there is a codec pack called Vemode is this just for Encoding or can they do both??
MSmart wrote on 3/3/2010, 1:43 PM
It's up to the application to determine if it can decode (read) or encode (write) a file using a particular codec.

A codec is basically a set of rules that help a program know how a file is read or written.

So to answer your question simplisticly, a codec does both.

Now just one more thing?

I have the codec pack I told you about all the way at the top of this topic.

So if I get the other codec pack Vemode will it cause me problems or can I have both codec packs on my system???

You know to cover all the Basses
MSmart wrote on 3/3/2010, 10:06 PM
Cover the bases, then you should read this:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/codec.mspx

and maybe get this application to keep track of your codecs:

http://www.updatexp.com/sherlock-codec-detective.html

Sorry this is what I ment.

I have a CODEC Pack like I say the one all the way at the top of the topic.

And then I found Vemode CODEC pack also.

And all the time I see more and more CODEC packs out there with more and diferant CODECs in them.

And I just ment if I keep adding more and more CODEC Packs to my computer if I have a file that needs a sertain one it will always get it.

You know how you can keep adding FONTs to build up your FONT list.

Or if you keep adding CODECs to your system they will not work right or is this not how it works
MSmart wrote on 3/5/2010, 10:55 AM
Only install a codec (or pack) if you are having a problem reading/writing a video file. Don't build up a codec list like you do for fonts.

I'm not an expert with codecs so I went looking and found this:

http://www.howtogeek.com/wiki/Why_Codec_Packs_Are_Bad

In that document it mentions that codecs use "merits" to determine which get used first. Installing a pack you don't need may cause problems for existing codecs. This program can help diagnose codec merit problems:

http://paul.glagla.free.fr/filmerit_en.htmp

Bottom line, don't install codec packs if you aren't having a problem.
