codec issue - can you help?

I am needing to edit video files that originally came from a Flip video camera.

In order to get them to play on my Windows Vista computer, I needed to download the 3IVX codec. Now they play fine in Windows Media Player.

However, Vegas still only places the files as audio. Unchecking "do not use 3rd party codecs" under Preferences > General did not solve the problem. So i don't know how to get the program to use the codec.

I would be most grateful for any help. Thanks in advance.

Download MediaInfo and post all the details about your files. It should be easy to figure out.

Ok, here's what it says:

Container & general information:

AVI: 119 MiB, 4mn, 40s
1 video stream: MPEG-4 Visual (XviD)
1 audio stream: ADPCM (Microsoft)

First video stream
3 383 Kbps, 640*480 (4:3), at 30.000 fps, MPEG-4 Visual (XviD) (Advanced Simple@L5)(BVOP)

First audio stream
176.4 Kbps, 44.1 KHz, 1 channel, APDCM (Microsoft)

What version of VMS?

Ok, this is easy to resolve. You just need the XViD codec to be installed. Not the 3iVX codec, but the freeware XViD one. Please google it, don't have the URL off hand right now.

It's VMS 8.0

I checked and I do have the XviD codec as well (so maybe that's the one that's letting me play the videos in Windows Media Player).

But I don't know how to get VMS to use the codec.

This works with XViD videos most of the time: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Koepi_XviD.htm Uninstall the previous one first.

Ok, I uninstalled the codec I was using before and installed the one you recommended.

Unfortunately it's the same situation - I can play the video on my computer in Windows Media Player, but when I add it to VMS, it only shows it as being audio.

Any ideas on what else I can try?

I'm still stuck!

Is it a Vista issue perhaps??

Please help me!

Can you please upload such a file somewhere so I can test it? Just 2 seconds of that format.
