Codec trouble Please help!!!

I used a dvd ripper program to extract from dvd a service recorded at my church. When I try to load it in the media bin I get a pop up that simply says:
"an error occured while opening a codec. The video was ripped as an AVI file by the way.

please help with ideas

When you ripped, did you have a choice of codecs, or did just save as an AVI?

If i had to guess, i'd probably guess that a DivX codec was used by default.

I did have a choice of codecs since you mentioned it DaveT2.....wonder which I should have picked....must have picked the wrong one.
