Codecs....

I can go to Sounds and Audio Devices and see what video codecs I have on my machine, and they agree with what VirtualDub shows me in its compression dialog. When I render to AVI from Vegas, however, I notice that some don't show up. Take Microsoft MPEG-4 v2, for example. I like to use this when I drop video into powerpoint, but I notice I can't get to it from Vegas. Instead, I render to huffyuv and then use Virtualdub to compress to MPEG-4 V2. Anybody else notice this, and is there a solution?

After selecting avi in the "save as type" box, click on "Custom" ( to the right of the "Template" box. Then the "Video" tab. Now go into the "Video format" box and your codec option should be there.

Yes, I understand that, but when you look at the codecs available in that box, some seem to be missing when you compare the list virtualdub reports.

Well, that intrigued me, so I opened VD and Vegas. In VD, I opened the "Select video compression" dialog. In Vegas, I selected Render As, and selected "Save As Type: Video for Windows (*.avi)." I then selected the Custom button, and in that dialog selected the Video tab. I then clicked on the drop down next to "Video format" and line by line, compared the codecs shown there with the codecs in VD. The only difference I saw was that Vegas includes several additional codecs, which are its internal codecs.

However, I don't have the MPEG-4 codec, so maybe there is something specific about that. Maybe there is something specific to that.

I do note that Vegas 6.0d has a save as type option of Sony AVC/ACC (*.mp4). Is this MPEG-4? If so, I'm sure it is a lot better than anything Microsoft has produced.

Yes, that's what I'm seeing here too. Perhaps one codec trumps another when they're similar, and that's why some seem to be missing. Either way, I'll experiment with the ones that seem to be added.

Yes AVC (i.e., H.264) is the same as MPEG-4, part 10 (which is what people generally mean when they use the term "MPEG-4" these days).
