I just bought this program and when I import the videos that I'm editing the audio isn't there. When I right click on it and open properties it says stream offline and I was wondering how I could get the audio to work. Do I need a codec or something. I am very confused, please help. Oh yea I am using Vegas Movie studio+ DVD v.6.0 build 43

What type of video are you using as a starting point?
Is it DV AVI from your digital camera or something else?

It is a Divx AVI, the audio is coming up as mpeg 1 layer 3. They are movies my freind sent to me on DVD disk and my DVD player wont read them. I have copied all of the files onto my hard disk. I was wanting edit them. I am really just a noob at doing all of this. So please be patient with me.

No worries. This is the best place to get help with any questions regarding editing.

Your problem is that the Vegas software is not supporting DivX. You can not edit using that software.

If you just want to watch the video on your PC, there are free software players on the web that you can download.

If you want a DVD player compatible with DivX, I bought a great Philips DVD player that is playing anything that you put in to it, including DivX. It was only $60 on Frye's.

Ok I see now so is there anyway to convert the video without losing to much quality? I have been strugling with this thing for days now. So now I need to look for some way to convert this stuff.

I have not been working much with converting, and you are right, you most probably loose quality.
Search on the web for video conversion.

There's a tutorial here that should help. I'm not sure that you'll want to follow it slavishly, but there's a lot of useful info and it has the option of using free apps.

An alternative would be to use a commercial package - they're around $30.

One site I looked at warned people not to use MPEG1 - layer 3 audio as it can cause the conversion to hang! The easiest solution might be to just buy a DivX compatible DVD player - they're getting cheaper all the time!
