Collaboration in Vegas Video

David-Lady wrote on 9/10/2023, 10:27 AM

Hi: I have been using Vegas by myself for years. Love it. I am starting a project with a creator who is remote to me. We will both be using Vegas to edit a new documentary series. Can someone please point me to the collaboration features and maybe instructions for how we can use the Magix tools and Vegas to both work on the same project from two locations. Thanks!!

Both of you will need VEGAS Pro 365, the VEGAS Pro subscription service, which includes the cloud storage you'll need to collaborate (it also includes a stock content library with millions of songs and stock video clips you can use in your projects). That's the first step. You'll then use the file drop feature in VEGAS Hub Explorer to upload your media to VEGAS Hub's cloud storage, as well as your project file. From there, download the media and the project file to your systems, and edit as needed. You can utilize the notes feature to leave notes on the timeline for each other, and each note has a "completed" option that lets you mark the note as completed so you can keep up with who has finished what task. Then when done editing, re-upload the project file to VEGAS Hub's cloud storage, so the other editor can sync your new file with their version they have and in turn get all the changes you made to the project synchronized on their system as well.

This feature is still in development and more ease-of-use updates will come along that streamline it even more from here, but that is how you do it currently. They did just send out a survey asking about collaborative features (it's linked at the top of this forum in a sticky thread if you want to chime in), so it is clear it is a feature that is on the team's mind for future updates.

I forgot to mention, to utilize the notes feature, click on the "project notes" tab, and then select "add new note". A note will be added at the point your playback cursor is at on the timeline. More on that here:

I think the best way is to divide it into mini projects, each with their own .veg project file. If one of you is the keeper of the main file you can import the other .veg into it as media and assemble the project in chunks. You can go from the main timeline to the embedded "nested" ones.

If you'd like to see more collaborative features you can write that in the new user survey: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-ideathon-event-survey-link-included--142448/

That doesn't work if, for instance, one person is color grading while the other cuts. You can't just import a project into another and have the color grading apply to the parent project. Using the same project in the cloud storage with local backups and notes accomplishes that.

Does having two people work on one project cause version mismatch issues? Do you have to alternate times when you edit?

@RogerS Resolve version locks people out, you can see the logic they use that Vegas may use or improve upon in the future go to 4:23

Shipping another copy of Harddisk physically to 2nd editor still faster than any cloud services available out there.

Im not sure how you can work with others on one project simultaneously. Maybe with a multiple VEG. Once you feel the cut is okey done by 2nd editor, copy the cut from that VEG into ur master VEG.
