Hello there
I'm a newbie to video editing!. I want to improve my skills in video editing so that I can improvise my home vidoes.

I have a video clip of my kid doing karate forms with other kids. Is there any way I can just show my kid in color and rest in B&W.

I would appreciate for any thoughts/ideas/howto's

Thanks in advance

It would be slightly complicated but I'll give you a non perfect simple way

1. Place your video on Track 1 in color
2. Place a copy of your video on track 2 (just right click and drag below your first clip and then select copy, it will create the track) and use a color correction filter to reduce the saturation to 0. (secondary color corrector will work well for this)
3. use the Sony cookie cutter filter on track one, and size it to your child on the first track.
4. In the method drop down box for the cookie cutter filter settings box, make sure the method is selected as "Cut away all but section".
5. Size it to fit around your kid
6. set all the key frames so that it will follow him.
7. Render.

Hope that helps

It's important to note that doing what frigid described, you'll only be able to have a square, rectangle, circle, oval, etc... around your kid. That means watever else is in that shape along with your kid will also be in color.

I think what you're asking is if you can make JUST your kid color... yeah, that takes a lot of work and personally I don't know how to do it.

I just wanted to make sure you understood his suggestion.

That's what I figured he was saying, I think it would have to done with a Brezier mask that would be frame by frame adjusted to fit his kid. That's why I said that it would be a non-perfect, simple way.

Anyway, I guess you could also do rotoscoping in the free wax plugin that's available, but that's not the most user friendly plugin for inexperienced users to navigate.
