The light blue color signifies that there is a fade at that end of the clip. The dark blue color signifies that the end of the clip is unfaded.

But, I've just noticed that if I split a video clip the triangles are dark blue, if it's an audio clip they're light blue. Any ideas?

Whenever you split an audio clip, it is automatically faded for a tiny fraction of a second to cover up any clicks or pops that might occur if the split isn't on a zero crossing.
