I just got Sony Vegas Platinum 8.0 and tried to do a basic Tape capture with my Panasonic PV-GS300, and I can't seem to get Sony to capture video from DV tape. It works fine with my old MotionDV studio stoftware that came with the camera.

Windows XP, SP2
Sony Vegas 8.0 Platinum, all the latest updates installed from Vegas

Repro:
1) Connect the camera - WIndows XP detects it fine
2) Set to "PC mode" to transfer tape
3) Boot Sony Vegas
4) Choose " File | Capture Video
5) Dialog opens, asks me to name my Tape, which I do
6) OK
7) Click "Capture Tape"

Error pops up: "The current device has had a communication failure"

The display window now reads "Device Communucation Error"

I've tried rebooting, redetecting, etc. Nothing works
