I got the SanDisk SDDR-91 (USB2) and I'm very happy with this model. Both with 32,64,128,128x-speed,256,512 Mb cards of 5 different brands. All CompactFlash...
Yeah, I had one of the SanDisk SDDR-86-07 card readers and it sucked. Would read my 8MB Smart Media card bot not my 128MB ones. SanDisc said that some cards the unit just won't be able to read so I promptly returned it and vowed never to buy another SanDisc product. I got a internal box that fits in a 5 1/2 inch bay and it worked great. Plus it adds 2 front USB and 1 front firewire port to my computer. At only $20 it's a steal.
I have an IN-Win 6-in-1 card reader in my PC. It fits in the second 3.5" drive bay under the floppy. You never know when you'll nee to read more than one type of media as you acquire various digital camera's etc. Works great for me and I like the fact that its built in.
Thanks for the replies. The internals look good, I was hoping to avoid cracking my case since it is a rack mount, but inthe long run maybe the best bet.
Hey the Canon I905D printer has a compact flash card reader built into it so you can print direct from your CFcard without a PC, it also doubles up as a normal reader so you can transfer data to and from your PC hard disk.
The i905D also prints directly onto CDR/DVD...
awesome printer check it out
If I just used my desktop I'd probably go with this front bay reader. But since I go with my laptopfe sometimes, it's good to have a mobile reader I can use everywhere. In fact, I even used it a couples of times to type my correspondance in Word (in the hotel room)(no network plugs in the rooms...), dumped it to a CompactFlash card, went to some internet cafe with my reader and did all my "pit stops" in 15 minutes instead of doing everything there in 45 mins. 30 mins left to have a fresh booze sometimes...
Same to get prints in a remote place: you go to this photocopy facility and have your reader and flash card(s) with you in case they don't have one (sometimes they'll just take a cd-rom). This scenario is a little less frequent though.
Mobile stockage solution is the way to think of it; not just pictures!
