Compared mpg encoders?

Anyone run any good subjective tests of the quality and speed of the Main Concept, Canopus Procoder, Nero and Ulead mpg encoders?

The Procoder output looks similar to the Main Concept encoder to my eye, but I haven't run any torture tests.

Several mentions on other websites basically say stay away from Ulead's encoder, and I've seen no real writeups of the Nero encoder.

Procoder IMO offers a richer colour gradation algorythm compared to main concept, however, its not as sharp as Main Concepts efforts. In addition to this, i also find MC a little noisier than Procoder, BUT it renders out at a much faster rate.
The biggest issue i have with Procoder is that it doesnt like progresive scan sourced material. It also doesnt like letterboxed 4:3 material, and for these reasons i now only use Main Concepts encoder (as a standalone app, not a render engine from Vegas)

If you do a Google search, you will find several VERY comprehensive MPEG encoder tests. Here's a link to one of many such pages:

As always, gentlemen, my thanks.

John, I'm also looking for opinions from the brain trust here, as I seem to learn more from these forums than just about anywhere else.

Well, if that's the case then I would recommend using the Forum Search function. That's always the quickest way to tap into that brain trust. Here's a sample I just got from a ten second search:

Wasn't trying to make a point -- just trying to get you an answer more quickly.

I know, and I appreciate it!

You've always been a big help - as are SO many folks on these forums.
