Comparison - Vegas Pro 8.0 to Liquid 7.2

video777 wrote on 4/15/2008, 10:42 PM
I had been asked to explain those things that I like better in Vegas Pro 8 than in Liquid 7.2. There are so many things that I decided to put them on one of my web sites. To be fair I also put some disadvantages. One of the things you will learn about me is that I tell it like it is. IOW, I try to be balanced. You are welcome to comment on these if you would like. Thanks.

Right.

Now.... try hard as you can to put this on the Liquid board and see how long it's there before it gets......deleted. ;)

I must say though, I do miss the hardware acceleration in Liquid. A computer has this ability and Vegas should take advantage of it.

(There's a sticky at the top.... #1 I think.... that shows you how to make a link).

Im sorry but there is no comparison, In all hoensty theyre very different beasts doing the same job. Designed for different mindsets and workflows and really cant be looked upon as being direct competitors with each other.

They are SO different it isnt funny.

Ill check out your thingy when i get a free moment

Welcome into the light, and away from the Dark Side! :)
I remember parts of your site from the Pinnacle Studio days. (Version 1 thru version 8, where I stopped the bleeding).
This is a great community of folks here.

Well... anything compared to Vegas is different. Vegas has a unique way of doing things and (IMO) this is what makes Vegas so much better. The interface is fast, flexible and easy to deal with.

Of course the bigger problem with Liquid today is it's being discontinued. The 7.2 version is the last one. There is supposed to be a successor but nobody knows exactly what it will be. There has already been official word that it will not contain things like 32 bit color, or network rendering, which are sort of used as yardsticks in comparing these kinds of programs. So that being said, it's hard to say whether this new program will compare at all with the semi-pro programs (like Vegas) that are out now. And competition with FCP and the likes.... well Avid is putting it's MC editor on the line for that with price drops and advertisement, so where this new program will fit in is anybody's guess. I would hazard to guess though that it will be LESS powerful than the present liquid since liquid ALREADY presents some competition towards MC, and there is no sense in having competing programs in the same company.

Pinnacle studio is also getting old under the hood (it contains the same render engine as Liquid) and it's interface is vastly different from Liquid which presents problems for those who wish to upgrade.... so I wonder if they're not going to come up with a new studio and a new kind of liquid that shares the same interface but gives better detail (kind of like VMS and Vegas)

comments:

No background rendering – This is a huge timesaver because it renders while you’re working.

Open a new instance of vegas. You can have as many as you want open. You can even have the current project open.

No InstantSave – You never lose anything with Liquid; even if it crashes.

Vegas has a built in autosave and an auto-backup. You must enable one (or both?) in the options. *I'VE* never lost anything because of this. one of jetdv's lets you customize this much more.

I'd say one of vegas's weakest point is the capture utility. it's not as nice or robust as others i've used.

to make links:
[ url ]link here[ /url ]

or

 [ url=link here ]descrition here[ /url ]

no spaces of course.

For those using Firefox, you can install the BBCodeXtra extension and have access to several commands with a simple right click. You can download the extention here

An even simpler way to make a clickable link (on this board anyway):

Just type "[" followed by "link=", paste your URL, then a final "]".

Make sure you have no spaces inside the square brackets. Spaces are shown below so that the example link doesn't turn clickable

[ link=http://www.acidplanet.com ]

Results in a link like this: http://www.acidplanet.com

Thanks everyone for the comments and the tips on creating links. The one I've used on other sites is {url=link}description{/url} but with these kind of brackets [ ]. I should have just tried it.

Also thanks for the information on background rendering and InstantSave. I don't think the save feature is quite as robust. In Liquid it saves constantly. Is the same true in Vegas or does it save every 5 minutes, or something like that?

It's amazing how many people remember me from my days using Pinnacle Studio. I have good memories and some not so good memories from those days. Many of you probably remember that Pinnacle flew me down to Mountain View to do two webcasts - one live and one prerecorded. It was cool to see their studio, etc. and they did treat me very well.

I don't know... one makes a 2nd veg every time you save & the other has caused me to never loose a project. Not sure when the autosave saves though.

TheHappyFriar,
I don't know how often it saves, but I would guess every 10 minutes or so. Once or twice I have lost some work on a project that crashed.

The autosave was in the same point as my own last save, so about 5-6 minutes of work was lost.

Its like comparing a violin to a Fender Stratocaster they are for different kinds of musicians its just that Vegas rocks and what's the name of that other thing again?

Under the internal preferences there is an AutoSave interval setting. The default is 300,000.

Thank you. That's very helpful information.

I appreciate all of the responses. I'm sure I too will eventually say, "What was the name of that other thing." I'm loving Vegas tremendously.

We're behind the times on this board. ... doesn't work.

The norm is to copy/paste someone's comments and then highlight it in some fashion with bold or italics.

I will say that the actual boards here are pretty sad (not the people but the software). Out of the boards I frequent, this is by far the worst. Can't Sony afford one of the free pieces of forum software out there? Or, do they lack the web skills or desire to improve this board? No e-mail notification, no statistics, no categories. Yuck!

I still love Vegas and this community.
