Does anyone know if there is a list of supported drives for DVDA3? I am going to buy a dual layer burner and I want to make sure I don't have any compatibility problems.
I am using the Pioneer A09. I was a beta tester for DVDA 3.0, and for quite awhile after I got the drive, DVDA 3.0 was the only thing that would write to it (I have since upgrade to Nero 6.x which, despite the chatter on various forums, seems to work just fine).
I haven't burned any dual layer disks on it yet, however (the compatibility of dual layer media with most DVD set-top players is pretty bad, so I'm not tempted). Also, the dual-layer disk prices are astronomical compared to normal single layer media.
In any case, mine aren't, but Nero 6 works well with them. I did have problems with Nero 6 and DVDA but solved them when I started using Nero Express. Don't know why Nero Buring ROM had problems!
I had some spirited debates on this forum about a year ago as to when we would see DVDA adopt dual layer abilities, and in particular, output to dual layer burners and DL media. I didn't think we would see it until version 3, and it's good to see it's a part of the feature set. I didn't think we would see tons of people last year (eventhough the burners and media became available) making dual layer discs, and that's basically what happened. Most stood on the side lines waiting to see how it worked for others. Who wants to pay 10x and more for media (compared to single layer) and end up with a bunch of coasters? I think a lot of people are still waiting for the media to come down in price, which ironically is making it take longer to do so. Back in the good 'ol days when dvd burning for the consumer became a reality, I paid as much, and even more than the current DL media. However, there really wasn't another choice (just like when recordable CD's became a reality--remember how expensive CD media was? I paid more than I do now for DL just to make my own "CD"), and the masses bought media by the tons. There is a choice between DL and single layer, and most are still waiting. Now there are more authoring apps offering dual layer output and burner support, my bet is we will see more and more users giving it a go, and the currently high priced media in stock will move and allow for cheaper stuff to become available.
I hope more users on this forum will post their experiences, so all can benefit (if not to just drive those disc prices down). I personally make DL discs all the time, but use a Mac (and DVDSP) to output a disc image and actually burn on a PC (with an A08) with formatting software (RecordNow). I find the discs to be every bit as compatible as any single layer media I have used in the past, and it has allowed me to not only add more video content per disc, but ROM content as well. This upgrade for DVDA3 has narrowed the gap between offerings elsewhere (and exceeded some that were ahead IMO last year, like DVDWS). Hopefully it (DVDA3) can make as reliable a dual layer disc for recordables as can be achieved elsewhere. If so, we will see significant price drops in media, and many will ultimately abandon single layer media. If the user experience remains poor (which can be due to process issues and not that the media itself is bad or can't work with existing set top players), then DL discs might never take off before we start getting entrenched in HD disc creation (of one format or the other).
