Compilation DVD

Hey All,

I wanna ask for some advice on a job I just took on...

A friend of mine gave me a box worth of tapes; VHS, VHS-C & 8mm. They want me to transfer all the tapes onto DVD (or a few DVDs) with a touch of editing - just cutting out blackspots. They also wanted me to assort each event as chapters on the disc(s), so they can flip through easily.

I wanted some help on the easiest way of doing this nicely. Should I capture using Vegas and edit in Vegas then output each tape singley to DVD-A format, then add chapter marks with DVD Architect. I might need to do each disc seperatley cause I only have around 120GB to spare, and AVIs ar so big.

Does any one have a better idea or more efficient way of doing this...rendering each video is such a hassle.

Thanks alot guys,
Speak too you soon.

P.S. - I don't want to buy any new hardware, I already have a Firewire card and I can run the video through my MiniDV Camcorder from my VCR, into the system.

Well,.....The fastest, and more or less best is not related to using a Sony product, for what you are wanting to do.
Get a hardware capture device, for this the ADS DV Link is wonderful, because it converts analog to MPEG directly, and its quality is outstanding. hardware encodes are generally better, and certainly faster than software encodes.
Then get DVD Workshop and capture streams from analog directly as MPEG, then there is no rendering, and disk space is saved because it's captured in a compressed format. That's it.

I agree with Spot. If you have an ATI All In Wonder car you're set too.

But, if you MUST edit the stuff first, capture everything that will be on 1 DVD, edit, then PTT. Then use a MPEG hardware capture/encoder device. That's what I would do if I have a DV camera. I've never used the ADS DV Link, but I have used the ATI AIW cards. You can get an AIW 7500 for around $100 or under.

For giggles, here's a GREAT workaround....
Send out from PTT to the hardware converter, while having DVD Workshop capturing at same time! Works great. I demo'd this at DVExpo. I haven't tried it with the ATI, but should work.

Thanks alot for your help guys, it was great.

I got myself a demo of DVD Workshop and capture while letting my MiniDV Camcorder convert it at the same time.

One question. After captuinf in MPEG-2 with DV Workshop is it possible to cut the footage. (Like split and delete sections of a captured track while staying within DVD Workshop?

Thanks once again!
