For those of you who get out from behind a camcorder viewfinder once in a while in order to shoot digital stills, here's a very nice little printer--the Epson PictureMate. It prints only 4x6" prints, but the results are photolab quality and the price is comparable, about $0.25 each (ink +paper).
The pigment ink comes in a thin paperback book-sized cartridge that mounts in the bottom of the printer. The finished print is smearproof and lightfast for 100 years. The printer is about the size of a kid's lunchbox and sports a little carrying handle.
Ink and paper come together in a 100-pack, and you can buy extra glossy paper separately, which you'll want to do, since the ink cartridge lasts longer than 100 prints.
I really like the fact that it's completely idiotproof--plug in the cord, transfer the camera chip (or connect the camera with a USB cable), print. Even my mom could do it.
The latest model has a little viewscreen but goes for about $200; Fry's has the original nonscreen model on sale (refurbished) for $79. I bought one of the latter, and it works great. The prints are great, and look and feel exactly like photolab prints.
