Do a green (or blue, yellow, red, etc) screen instead of an alpha. That should work.

The particles go grey when I use color screen...not sure why....

Render to stills/frame? Not all avi formats maintain alpha, & seems to be a source of increased antacid use importing to vegas.

By any chance are you changing the compositing mode from "Source (Alpha)" to "Screen"? This could do odd things to the colors. What TheHappyFriar is suggesting is to add the ChromaKey effect and select the solid background color as the key to be removed. ChromaKey is often referred to as "blue screen" or "green screen", which is why he uses the word "screen".

What pariticles are you rendering (fire, etc.). TGA file support alpha channel so try renderin to them and see what happens.
