Compositing Difficulty - Pls Help

Would appreciate assistance to a compositing newbie:

I have the following events -

1. Boy playing piano (Medium shot, top of head up to piano keys)
2. Panning shot of music sheet
3. Gradient from Generated Media

I was hoping to create the following sequence: Shot starts with boy playing piano. Music Sheet fades in to replace background but the boy, at the extreme left of frame should remain 100% solid with none of the new background (music sheet) spilling over him. Music sheet fades out and background returns.

I have been trying all sorts of combinations and as i am still groping with the parent-child concept, I have not achieved the shot I wanted. I would appreciate some enlightenment with the:

- clip order (or track heirarchy)
- composite modes
- parent child assignments

Thanks a whole lot!

Assuming the background is part of the video of the boy playing the piano , just duplicate that video and place it on track one and two. When you want the music sheet to come in split the piano video on track one and dissolve in the music sheet, pan & crop so it covers what ever area you want, dissolve back out and there ya go

Tried it - and it worked wonderfully! Admittedly, Bezier Curves are something I am also grappling with. But I will still tryo to lick the problem with a gradient matte from generated media. Still lost on that so if anyone has suggestions...

But thanks! Vegas forums are some of the most helpful places on the net.
