Compositing Mode, Compositing Child Help Please

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction to understand the use of the Compositing Mode and Make Compositing Child buttons on the video tracks?

I've read the small section in the help files multiple times and still don't understand why I would use these buttons instead of what I normally do, which is simply stack layers on top of each other--one on each track, in the order I want them to show through in the final video.

I normally work with green screen, luma key, and even alpha channel video and still clips and obviously, what I've been doing works.

Is there some hidden advantage of these buttons I'm not understanding?

Thanks a lot.

Maybe this will help:

in the vegas pro forum, there is a post illustrating a fade left to right effect that uses compositing with a gradient mask. This works with VMS P10.

overlays example

I had to adjust the control points on the "Linear White to Black" to see the fade.

Thanks but this tutorial has nothing to do with the child and parent composting functions that I can see. I've already use this simple technique to bounce between video clips on multiple tracks.

Thanks originalbob also, but this doesn't explain or help me understand the very specific use of parent and child compositing modes either.

While there, have a look at some of the other Vasst tips.

There's a good explanation starting from p283 in the Vegas Pro 9 Manual, which you can download for free from the Sony site.
