Compositing newbie question :)

Hi all,

Well picture louder than words so here it is, take a look at this :

http://fapomatic.com/show.php?loc=51&f=image0_1.jpg

Now I just discovered the masking trick where you can put point and obviously that's what I did , I outlined the girl (yes that's a shap of a girl)

Now I dropped a checkerboard media on it and the effect that I'd like to have would be the opposite of what you saw in the picture, the shape is formed with the checkered board.

For the result that you saw My first track is the outlined girl and the second track is the media and I set the compositing mode on the first track to CUT.

Tried all kinds of combination but the closest thing I got so far is what you just saw.

What would be the way to make it the opposite

Thanks

Phil

Try this
(it's a zip file with your original image both modified and not.
With the checkerboard in the image, it was difficult to remove the pattern without spending a lot of time, so it's just the idea, very basic. It'll open in V5 or 6

Hi Spot,

Thank you very much for your time

I don't understand , I my video track as parent and the media as a child track , apply the multiply (mask) compostition to the parent track as you did but the girl is still visible and the board is on top of her as you can see here:

Thanks for your input

Where is the checkerboard coming from? Is this from Vegas? or is it from an app that uses checkerboard to indicate alpha channel?
To do this correctly, you need either:
1. Black and white image such as the one I created for you
or
2. White image, with transparent background
or
3. Transparent area for the "girl" with a white background

Any of these can be used as a parent to the image of the "girl" underneath. You could also use a Bezier Mask, but if you're cutting out of video, that would be difficult to do.
I guess I'm not totally clear on what it is you're wanting to end up with. I assumed a background, the girl in the mask?

Hi Spot ,

Well my instinct told me to look in the FX dept and I simply dropped a mask generator (alpha channel) on the "girl" track , then I put the checkerboard to Mask" and that was it. As you can see here :

http://fapomatic.com/51/image2_1.jpg

and yes the checkerboard was taken from the media generator pool in Vegas , it is not from the outside world :)

This image sums up pretty much what I've done , so yes I guess I used a bezier mask (my first succesful attempt !!!)

Thank you very much for the heads up

That's what should be in the Slave2 file, same technique using different picture. Glad it helped out, congrats on getting started in compositing!

Hi Spot ,

You are right about the slave2 veg file , miss it I guess.

Boy I just opened a door to millions of possibilities ...... again :)

Until next time take it easy

Phil

ps: I read your tutorial on "how to achieve a film look" and on my next shooting I will try the "normal" mode on my GL2 instead of the "frame" , wish me luck :)
