Compositing Problem

Establishing a parent/child relationship does not seem to be working in Vegas 5 (5b, build 160) on my PC...changes that should occur when I click the Make Compositing Child button do not, though the Track Control Panel indicates the parent/child relationship has been established. This function works with no problem in Vegas 4, making me think I've inadvertently disabled it. Running Windows XP Home. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Tried resetting defaults at start-up...problem still exits.

Are you expecting the upper track to mask the lower track? In Vegas 5 this is done slightly different. You have to manually add the Mask Generator effect to the top clip. In Vegas 4 this was automatic.

Chienworks,

Thank you. The information you provided solves one mystery.

However, I'm still missing something when it comes to the parent/child relationship. For example, as I understand it, if I put generated text media on the top track of the time line, then put video media on the track below it and make that track the child track, the text should act as a mask. I was trying to do this as I understood it to be described in the Compositing section of Spot's Vegas 5 book. Clicking on the child track does nothing.

Thanks again for the explanation. I've learned a great deal from your helpful responses to other.

Found the answer in the manual...just had to read it more carefully this time.

Put the parent track in mask mode in the compositing modes.

Thanks for the input.

The "Understanding the parent/child track relationship" section of the manual starting on page 212 explains the basics. I just hadn't read it carefully the first time and had missed that part about setting the parent track compositing mode to Mask, just as Spot recommended in his response.
