Compressing & Normalising Audio (Vegas Pro 17)

I wish to compress then normalise audio in that order, which I understand is the correct sequence. However, when I add a Track Compressor to a timeline event, and then switch normalisation on for that event, it appears to me that normalisation is applied before the plugin, rather than after it.

Also, does anyone know why the default normalisation for Vegas Pro is only -0.1dB? Wouldn't -3dB be more sensible? This is set in the Audio tab in Preferences.

Used Vegas Pro since about version 14

Vegas Pro 22 (VP20 also installed)

Win 11 Home 64 bit, always updated

Intel Core i5 13400F, 10 cores/16 threads

32GB DDR5 RAM, 5200

Intel Arc A750 Graphics card

MSI Pro B760M-A Motherboard

If you are going to compress, which generally sets a max level ceiling, you could just use volume to bring the audio back up. Normalizing isn't really going to gain anything. (no pun intended)

The VP normalize method is peak . There is no AGC or any kind dynamics compression, like the Sound Forge 'RMS' normalize option. If you wish to lower an event's gain after normalizing, click and drag the top of the event boarder downward. A track volume envelope can be inserted as well as the overall track volume .. If you really want a lower default peak normalization factor, that can be changed in "Options> Preferences>Audio> Normalize peak level (dB)". For individual events, 'normalizing' can be disabled and recalculated by right-clicking the event and selecting "Properties> Event tab, Normalize". For a more even volume event. track or master, JB's Broadcast processor has an (uncommonly 'decent' sounding) AGC, as well as a multiband comp, peak input/output limiting and M/S parameters. Set up may be confusing to non-audio folks though.
